Social App (COVID Lockdown)

When COVID19 hit europe in 2020 and the lockdowns began, my friends and I suddenly found ourselves stuck at home, and socially isolated while living in different places all across Europe. Before lockdown we would only meet once every few months, but with everything closed down I started an online community where we'd have frequent zoom calls as a group.

After the initial long story telling phase and without us experiencing much outside of the calls and online classes we needed games to play - games that allowed for one person to be talking or doing something while the others interacted, the sequential communication mode of group calls was a limiting factor. I sat down and programmed a scrappy small social game as a desktop application. You could add players, receive prompts, challenges, and more. The game was full of inside jokes which made it the group favourite.

More and more people joined our calls and surprisingly the game scaled well. The game became a community favourite and more and more friends wanted it - especially for their phones as lockdown lifted and they wanted to take some version of it to other events without having to take a laptop with them. I recruited a friend with strong programming expertise to help me build an Android app. Till this day the app is a community favourite and still used regularly at gatherings. However we never released it outside our group, but it continued to spread among friends and friendsof friends.
